Een soul-belofte uit Zweden

Ergens in de eerste maanden van dit jaar bracht Samson for President een kort bezoek aan ons land en deed een paar ‘instore’ optredens. Zo ook bij mijn favoriete platenzaak, Sounds, in Tilburg. Helaas was ik die dag verhinderd, maar er werden wel een paar geluidsdragers achtergelaten, zodat ik alsnog kennismaakte met de muziek van Samson for President. Getroffen door de geweldige kwaliteit zocht ik contact met de platenmaatschappij c.q. vertegenwoordiger van deze artiest in Nederland. Hij bracht mij vervolgens in contact met de Zweed. Tijd voor een vraaggesprek over zijn muziek.

Een bijzondere naam

Waarom koos je “Samson for President” als artiestennaam? Wat is het verhaal dat daar achter schuil gaat?

“Well, at first it was Samson, but the first year we started putting posters up it was election year. So all the cultural posters where covered with political posters. In Stockholm the political posters have a first priority, so we came up with ”Samson For President”. But it didn’t work haha…”

De biografie die ik heb mogen lezen is erg kort. Vandaar dat ik misschien een paar voor de hand liggende vragen ga stellen. Ben je geboren en getogen in Zweden? Kun je wat vertellen over je achtergrond?

“I grew up in Stockholm, but my parents moved around quite a bit. We lived for two or three years in San Francisco, California. It was a great time. I love being in The States. My parents had plans for moving to Colombia too, since my mom is from Bogota. But they were cancelled and we moved back to Stockholm. I guess it’s been quite a multi-culti background where we listened to Mozart, Juan Luis Guerra, Chopin and Swedish folk music. But it’s always good to get a wide perspective on things when you grow up. You learn quickly that there’s not only one way of doing things.”

Wanneer besloot je om professioneel met muziek verder te gaan?

“It has always been my dream to do it professionally, but it was not until quite recently that I dared. The final blow was while studying at the University of Stockholm and it just felt like dying a little bit. No music. I remember sitting with some of my friends from school discussing some stuff and I asked them where they thought I should get work and they all looked up at me and stared right into my eyes. WORK?! What do you mean? You’re supposed to be on stage! And so I felt a great relief and decided to start making music for real.”

Soul uit Zweden

Ik luisterde veel naar lokale muziek om de muziekscene te ontdekken toen ik in Zweden was geweest, maar kwam nooit in aanraking met Zweedse soulmuziek. Is het geen bijzondere of verrassende keuze om juist soulmuziek te gaan maken als Zweed?

“Well, we have a bunch of new soul artists coming from Sweden. Most of us know each other, and we have been doing it for quite some time. The most well-known one today is Seinabo Sey, but there are many, many others. It’s sort of an underground movement that has been growing the last few years. But soul is just an old label. I spoke with a fellow musician about the genre before the Sisyphus album and she said: ”It’s 2014, every genre is blending. Do what the fuck you like!” Of course there are still afro roots in it, it dates back to blues and so on. But then again almost everything dates back to blues.”

Het lijkt erop dat je je eigen sound hebt gevonden op Sisyphus, of zie ik dat verkeerd?

“I believe we all change constantly. I also believe we have many different sides to our personality. Put those together with the fact that music changes constantly and one finds many reasons to why one’s music changes. Still, I agree with you: I feel as though I am closer to myself than ever before. I have found something, I’m not sure if “sound” is the right title to it, but I really feel as though I have found something! Let’s hope it keeps bringing in the good stuff.”

Invloeden en toekomst

Welke artiesten hebben je beïnvloed bij het maken van je debuutalbum?

“Many different artists. I have always loved John Legend’s first album and I listened very much to it during the making of ”Papas Old Piano”. But many things where influencing me at the time; not only music. Somehow my biggest inspirations right now are not linked to music, but to other things like modern art or the life story of some homeless guy I met on the bus.”

Is er een speciale reden waarom je de muziek uitbrengt op vinyl en niet op cd?

“I realized all my idols made their music on vinyl, and since the digitalization of music you can easily find it on the internet and stream it, so why not? Isn’t it cool to have your own vinyl?!”

Eigenlijk is Sisyphus geen volledig album maar een mini-album. Wanneer verwacht je een volledig album uit te brengen met je geweldige muziek?

“Next year you will see the first traces of something new. It’s coming for you.”

Ga je toeren als een singer-songwriter of met een band?

“I love having a band. I really do. They help me focus, they give me energy and they get me home when I’m drunk. So there’s only benefits. But singing solo brings an intensity to what you do, so I prefer to mix as often as I can.”

In een review heb ik gelezen dat je klinkt als Sam Cooke, die James Vincent McMorrow is tegengekomen. Wat vind je van de vergelijking met deze artiesten?

“Well, Sam is my father and James my mother. They met at a bar in Sweden and had me in all discretion. So it’s no wonder we sound alike.
I’m a fan of James and his music, but I really love Sam Cooke and his music. I find it an honour to be compared with both of them, really.”

Zijn er plaatsen waar je graag zou willen optreden in de toekomst? Aan welke plaatsen in of buiten Nederland denk je in zo’n geval?

“For next year we are hoping to get on the road again and go through some places and festivals in The Netherlands and Germany. I’d love to do a US tour too and we have some people we are talking to in Australia, but one thing at a time. First I’m going to finish the stuff I’m working on right now.”

Opnieuw in Nederland

Door de vertegenwoordiger van Samson for President is de verwachting uitgesproken, dat dit talent begin 2016 opnieuw ons land aan zal doen voor een tournee. Hopelijk neemt hij dan zijn nieuwste, volledige album mee. Live schijnt hij een sensatie te zijn, die niet gemist mag worden zo hoor ik van liefhebbers die hem gezien hebben vertellen. Daar willen we dan ook graag kennis mee maken! Tot die tijd genieten we van zijn muziek, zoals we die op Sisyphus tot ons kunnen nemen.
